Public Water Systems

See Reference 7 and Reference 8

  • Provide technical assistance to water suppliers.

  • Monitor the quality of water to ensure compliance with State & Federal drinking water regulations.

  • Coordinate operator certification programs and training.

  •  

Private Water Systems

  • Conduct mandatory surveys of systems for real property transfers.
    (See Form 3)

  • Provide education and recommendations to insure proper well development and protection.   Provide well disinfection instructions.
    (See Reference 4)

  • Analysis of drinking water for bacteria and nitrates by the Cattaraugus County Laboratory.
    (See Reference 2)


Private Sewage Systems

  • Conduct mandatory surveys of systems for real property transfers.
    (See Form 3)

  • Conduct soil percolation tests and design septic systems for single family homes. (See Reference 10)

  • Issue permits to construct and operate private systems.
    (See Form 2)

  • Respond to complaints of improper sewage disposal.


Environmental Complaints / Nuisances & Concerns

  • Env. Health Complaint / Referral Form (see Form 12)
  • Conduct investigations of environmental pollution and public health nuisances.

  • Make recommendations and utilize public health laws for correction of all public health hazards.

  • Mosquito control / West Nile Virus

  • Lead paint hazard control


Animal Bites / Rabies

  • By law, any animal bite of a person must be reported to the Health Department.

  • An investigation of every bite is conducted to ensure that there is no risk for rabies infection.

  • Submit suspected rabies specimens to the NYS Laboratory for testing.

  • Conduct free animal Rabies vaccination clinics.
