Department of Aging for Cattaraugus County New York

Meals on Wheels is requesting Volunteers in Olean

The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging's Director Ann Feightner is requesting assistance with delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound individuals who live in the city of Olean. The department is looking for people who can work on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Many of the people receiving meals live alone and are unable to prepare meals for themselves.

Ms. Feightner said,

"The noontime meal is vital to the health of frail, homebound senior citizens. Without these meals the health and nutritional well-being of many senior citizens could be compromised."

If you are available to volunteer in the Olean area and would like to help your neighbors please call the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging at 716-373-8032 and ask for David Rodkey or call Holly Weidt at the Olean Senior Nutrition Site at 716-373-9251 between 8 am and 2 pm.

Keep in mind, volunteering to deliver meals takes 1 to 1.5 hours of your day. In addition to the intrinsic values of volunteering, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program offers some mileage reimbursement for transportation and limited volunteer insurance while volunteering.

Volunteers are not limited to people over the age of 55. Anyone 21 years and older with a valid driving license is eligible to volunteer.

Ms. Feightner added,

"The need is urgent and of utmost importance for the Home Delivered Meal program to operate. Without volunteers there would not be a Home Delivered Meal program."
